Christ used the terms Sleep and Dead synonymously with Lazarus and others. This sleep is referring to this Earthly world.

Note:
hades has two meanings in different languages.
1.hades/hell was a Second part of two parts in the Second Heaven and,
2.hades/Sheol refers to the entire former Second level of Heaven.
However, we will be mostly focuss on #2 of hades/Sheol on Heaven’s Second level.
There were two parts in the Second level of Heaven to house all of the sleep/dead.
The Two (Paradise and hades/hell) used to share the Second level of Heaven together, before Christ’s crucifixion. The entire Second level was then first called hades/Sheol in Hebrew. But since Christ’s crucifixion, Christ has moved Paradise up to Heaven’s top level, where Father-God dwells. The transition happened while Christ was in the grave.
Was, Is And Will Be:
Part 1-Paradise/Abraham’s Bosom, WAS once part of the Second level of Heaven. It was the temporary abode for the sleep/dead Saints. Both, parts 1 and 2 WERE called hades/Sheol. Again, Paradise WAS located in a separate part of Heaven’s Second level. It held The Saints while they waited on Jesus’ crucifixion. Then Jesus took them to Heaven’s top level where God dwells. Paradise WILL become the New Earth/New Jerusalem City, as it WILL descend down from the New Heaven. AFTER Judgement, The Saints will forever dwell with Christ and Father-God in New Earth/New Jerusalem City.
Was, Is And Will Be:
Part 2-hades/hell WAS the other part of Sheol/hades. It IS NOW currently a temporary abode for the dead unjust/unsaved, still located in the Second level of Heaven. Death’s House-in Greek, for the sleep/dead unjust/unsaved IS NOW alone. It’s also called Sheol-in Hebrew, in some Bible Versions and Languages. The current temporary hades/hell IS also called by three other names – Death’s House, Burial Place and Tartarus in Greek. The present day translation of Eternal hell/Hell IS Gehenna, The Lake Of Fire or Perdition. At the destruction of sin, hades WILL expand into Hell. The Abyss, Bottomless Pit or The Lake Of Fire and Brimstone. Hell WILL BE a deep fiery place for the unjust/unsaved sleep/dead and enemy of God to live forever in torment. Hell or Perdition WILL BE the final/permanent and Eternal home for the unjust/unsaved dead. There never WAS nor never WILL BE rest there. Its contents WILL BE thrown into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone, at the end of Jesus’ judgement and God’s unleashed Wrath. Hell WILL BE the final place for Satan and his followers. It will then also be known as Hades in Greek, in some Bible Versions and Languages.

[There WAS once a gulf which separated the two parts of Heaven’s Second level.
The gulf/separation between Paradise and hades/hell is described in Genesis 1:8-10 KJV and Luke 16:26 KJV

It would be logical to discern that between the spherical Earth’s cores and crust are possibly this gulf, since it separates the Most Highest Heaven from The Bottomless Pit.]

The Lake Of Fire and Brimstone(Sulfur) is an intense fiery place for the unjust and enemy of God to live permanently. It will later be known by two other names – Hell and Perdition.
